Martinsburg, WV Heritage Days.
The Martinsburg Heritage Festival celebrates the history and heritage of the city of Martinsburg, West Virginia. Special events and activities are held at various historical venues at different times during the month of May each year.
The town of Martinsburg was laid out on the lands of Adam Stephen, a colonel during the French & Indian War and later a major-general during the American Revolution, shortly after he settled along the Tuscarora Creek in the early 1770s. The town was officially chartered by the General Assembly of Virginia in 1778. It was later the home of General Elisha Boyd, who fought in the War of 1812, and his plantation in Martinsburg was later the home of the prominent Faulkner family. The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad brought the first trains to town in 1842 and would play a significant role in the strategies of the North and the South during the Civil War. Belle Boyd grew up and lived in Martinsburg and is infamous for shooting a Yankee soldier in town during the early part of the war, which led to her resolution to become a spy shortly thereafter in other locations. The following century brought many exciting opportunities to the business life of the town, but with that growth there were many important and significant changes which did not necessarily come easily through labor strikes, civil rights issues, and soldiers being called off to war. However, the town survived and the surrounding areas of Berkeley County also grew, and through the Martinsburg Heritage Festival, we look back at that history for a moment to contemplate the struggles and trials that we have endured, to give us courage to look forward with hope and dreams for the future.
